developmental therapy

We provide the Masgutova Neurosensorimotor Reflex Integration (MNRI) based on the work of Dr. Svetlana Masgutova, PhD.

reflexes

What are reflexes?

Reflexes are automatic actions the body takes in response to certain stimuli. We are all born with these natural movements that are essential in the development of head control, muscle tone, and sensory integration. The reflexes develop in utero and begin to emerge at birth, ideally, they integrate by age 1. These reflexes are the foundational roots upon which higher cognitive functions are developed.

Why would a reflex be retained (not integrated)?

• Traumatic birth experience

• Traumas, falls or head injuries

• Illness, chronic ear infections

• Lack of or delayed creeping, crawling and skipping

• Lack of or delayed tummy time

• Lack of proper movement

• Dietary imbalances or sensitivities, toxins

• Chronic stress and anxiety

What happens when reflexes are not integrated?

When reflexes are not fully integrated, the body can be stuck in fight or flight causing stress which negatively impacts neuromuscular coordination. Other systems can be impacted as well, such as sensory perception, visual function, auditory processing, emotional regulation, memory, reading and higher cognitive skills.

Signs and symptoms they are not integrated

• Sensitivity to noise, light, touch

• Startle easily

• Poor balance or lack of coordination

• Clumsy or awkward movements

• Poor hand-eye coordination

• Has trouble sitting still

• Difficulty with focus or paying attention

• Unable to follow multi-step directions

• Struggles in school, despite intelligence

• Tantrums

• Low self-esteem or confidence

How will reflex integration help?

Reflex integration is growing a strong foundational root system for more efficient movement and cognitive development. Once reflexes are integrated, information is processed in a safer and more productive way. Improved gross and fine motor skills, better focus, improved body awareness, improved sensory, auditory and visual processing. Reading and writing become easier, social skills improve. As skills are learned with less effort, self-confidence increases, and thus overall quality of life improves.
